What we charge

Labor: $175 per hour. $225 per hour for European and specialty vehicles.

Diagnosis: $175 plus tax.

Parts are quoted per job. We tell you what a part costs before we order it.

Why we charge for diagnosis

Diagnosis is the work. It is not the sales pitch for the work.

Finding out why a car is doing something takes a technician, a bay, a lift, a scan tool, and time. On a European car or a hybrid it often takes a road test with the tool still connected. That time is real whether or not you buy the repair afterward.

We would rather charge for that time and tell you what we actually found.

The diagnostic fee is separate from the repair.

What a diagnosis includes

• A technician confirms the symptom you described, on a road test if the fault needs one.
• We pull and record the fault codes, and the live data where the fault calls for it.
• We test the circuit, the component, or the system the evidence points at. A code names a circuit. It does not name a broken part.
• We check manufacturer service bulletins and the known patterns for your year, model, and engine.
• You get the finding in plain language. What is wrong, what we tested to know it, and what the repair involves.
• You get a written estimate for that repair.

What a diagnosis does not include

• The repair. Diagnosis tells you what the repair is.
• Parts. Nothing is replaced during a diagnosis.
• Every fault on the car. One fee buys the diagnosis of the problem you brought in. A car with three unrelated problems is three problems.
• A fault that will not appear while the car is with us. If it does not act up here, we tell you what we could reproduce, what we could not, and what it would take to catch it.
• A verdict on work another shop did. We will inspect it and tell you what we find. What that means for a bill you paid somewhere else is between you and that shop.

How an estimate works

1. Tell us the symptom. What the car does, when it does it, and how long it has been doing it. The more specific you are, the less time we spend reproducing it.
2. We diagnose. $175 plus tax.
3. We write the estimate. Parts, labor hours at $175 per hour ($225 per hour for European and specialty vehicles), and any shop supplies or fees, itemized.
4. You approve it. Nothing is replaced before you do.
5. If we open the job and find something the estimate did not cover, we stop, call you, and give you a revised number. You approve that too.

An estimate is what we expect the job to take, based on what the diagnosis found.

Our warranty

Nationwide warranty through TechNet: 3 years / 36,000 miles on qualifying parts and labor. Break down out of town? Call the number on your receipt, or call us at 419-214-0244, and you'll be sent to the nearest TechNet shop.

Ambrosia's Service Assurance Plan (ASAP)

ASAP is our paid preventative maintenance plan, with Preferred and VIP options. Diagnosis is not part of either plan. Members pay our regular rates for diagnosis and repairs, with their plan's labor discount taken off. View our plans.
